🌱 Origin & Producer

This lot is grown in Hechi Village, located in the Bensa district of the Sidama Region — one of Ethiopia’s most respected high-altitude coffee zones. The area sits at ~2,100 meters, where cooler temperatures and slow cherry maturation produce exceptional fruit density and clarity.

The cherries are cultivated by smallholder farmers, many of whom maintain traditional garden-style farms intercropped with shade trees, enset (false banana), and indigenous flora. These farmers deliver ripe cherries to the Sagara collection point, which is part of the well-known Daye Bensa network — an award-winning producer/exporter recognized for quality consistency, traceability, and sustainable community development.

🧪 Processing

This is a Natural Process (Dry Process) Grade 1 lot. Only fully ripe cherries are hand-sorted before being dried whole on raised African beds.
During drying, cherries are turned frequently to ensure uniform dehydration, prevent mold, and develop a clean fruit profile.

The natural process in Bensa is known for producing coffees with:

  • High aroma intensity

  • Jammy sweetness

  • Distinct berry and tropical fruit character

  • Silky, clean finish

The high elevation (2,100 MASL) helps slow down fermentation, resulting in refined sweetness and better flavor separation compared to lower-altitude naturals.

☕ Tasting Notes

Aroma: Berry, mango, peach, orange peel
First Sip: Juicy strawberry → sweet peach → ripe mango
Mid-Palate: Balanced tropical sweetness, clean stonefruit clarity
Finish: Lingering orange peel with a warm, caramel-toffee sweetness

    Overall Profile:
A lively, fruit-forward Sidama natural with a soft, syrupy texture. Bright yet delicate, with a beautiful balance between juicy acidity and candy-like sweetness.

Farm Info

The coffee is produced by smallholders surrounding Hechi Village (Sagara Kebele) in the Bensa highlands. Farms here typically range from 0.5 to 3 hectares, planted with traditional Ethiopian heirloom varieties grown under natural shade.

This micro-region is supported by Daye Bensa, founded by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo. Daye Bensa works with 50,000–70,000 outgrower farmers across Sidama, providing:

  • Access to quality-controlled processing stations

  • Premium payments for ripe cherry

  • Second payments (bonuses) after export

  • Community development projects (including building local schools)

  • Training in sustainable farming and selective harvesting

Hechi/Sagara’s terroir is characterised by:

  • Volcanic soil rich in nutrients

  • High rainfall

  • Cool mountain climate

  • Dense shade canopy

  • Slow cherry maturation

All of this contributes to its signature cup: vibrant fruit, floral nuance, and refined sweetness.
