Not your usual Ethiopia.

Out of all the Ethiopian coffees on the cupping table, this was the one that wowed us.

It was one of those cups that made us stop, taste it again, and go, okay, this is interesting.

From Alo Village in Bensa, Sidama, this natural lot brings together juicy blueberry, soft lavender florals, and a sweet longan-like finish. It’s fruity and expressive, but in a way that feels a little different from the Ethiopian coffees we’re used to.

We liked it so much, we knew we had to bring it in.

Process

This coffee is natural processed, which means the coffee cherries are dried whole with the fruit still around the seed.

The cherries are sun-dried on raised beds, allowing them to dry gradually and develop more sweetness and fruit character.

And you can really taste that here. The natural process gives this coffee its juicy blueberry character and sweetness, while still letting those delicate Ethiopian florals shine through.

In This Cup

Blueberry · Lavender · Longan

First comes the blueberry — juicy, sweet and immediately noticeable. Then you get a gentle lavender-like floral note, followed by a sweet, almost tropical longan character that lingers at the end.

It’s fruity, floral, sweet and beautifully aromatic, with a little more depth and body from our medium espresso roast.

Why You'll Like This Coffee

Honestly, this is one for anyone who thinks they already know what an Ethiopian coffee is going to taste like.

It surprised us on the cupping table, and we think it might surprise you too.

It has everything we enjoy about Ethiopia — fruit, florals and aromatics — but the combination of blueberry, lavender and longan gives it a personality of its own.

If you’re looking for an espresso that’s fruity, a little different, and genuinely fun to drink, this is the one we’d point you towards.
