From the lush highlands of Sumatra, Indonesia, this coffee showcases the island’s hallmark Giling Basah (wet-hulled) tradition—an iconic post-harvest method that imparts its unmistakable character. The result is a cup with a rich, medium-to-thick body layered with notes of chocolate, warm spices, and subtle herbs, all tied together with a lingering sweetness.

The process begins with freshly harvested cherries, which are pulped and washed before being partially dried with their mucilage intact. Once reaching around 35% moisture, the parchment is hulled and then dried further to 12% over the course of two weeks. This careful sequence of steps captures the depth and rustic charm of Sumatran coffee.

Behind this lot is Alfiner, a dedicated producer who grew up in a coffee-farming family and witnessed firsthand the challenges local farmers faced in selling their beans. Driven to make a difference, he traveled across the region sourcing high-quality cherries, eventually building a network of more than 170 smallholder farms. Today, Alfiner operates two mills, paying farmers a premium price for their cherries and uplifting the community through sustainable, quality-focused practices.
